Getting to Know Me and the Inspiration Behind My Blog Journey

Hey guys! My name is Kayla. I'm setting out on this journey as a total novice. I have no background in any tech or website production. I am giving this a try to see if I can help any of you to learn something new, find someone to relate to or just read something that might make you smile and laugh.

Growing up I always thought I wanted to be one of those high class CEO women in the Prada shoes and carry a $5,000 briefcase. But as it turns out, God had other plans for me. And let me say, I am so glad that He knows better than I do because the job I have had for the past twelve years is the best I could ever have. My career is a "stay at home mom". I am the mother to two amazingly awesome boys of 11 and 9. I spend everyday working on our family farm and keeping life as we know it going. My husband and I started a hatchery and market garden a few years back called 4K Farm. We have been experimenting and working together to get this business off the ground and have found that we are no too shabby at working things out with just the resources that we have at home.

I wanted to start this blog to help others find ways to become more self-sufficient. For my family, I work hard to make our meals from scratch to avoid all of the super processed garbage that is in most of the pre-made food. Now, I know how that sounds. "Of course she has time to do that, she stays at home all day!" You can totally do it too. It just takes some planning and a bit of time management. That is another skill I would like to show those of you who read this. Also, working on our little farm my husband and I have learned so many little tricks that can help with your garden and if you feel like diving into the world of poultry, I've got you covered there too! I just want to help others learn new ways of approaching farm life. It does not have to be hard or crazy expensive nor do you need to have 100 acres to have a garden to grow your own food or have farm fresh eggs. There are so many fun and easy things that anyone can do or try!

My Journey: How I Got Here

Blogging? I never thought that I would have the courage to do this. I love talking to people. My husband calls me "the social one" but putting my ideas and thoughts out there for just anyone to read and lets be honest, judge what I put out there is a little terrifying. But, I tell my sons all the time that they can't be afraid to try new things. So here I am, giving it a go. As I said before, I want to be able to help others. My husband and I have built our business up from nothing. We started with 10 chickens and one little tiny barn. We have built, torn down and moved so many pens and barns since our start I think I have lost count. Our garden has died, been eaten away by bugs, torn up by rabbits and deer on more than one occasion. Not to mention how many different types of garden beds and locations we have tried in order to get every plant we have to find its happy place. We have also gone through the roller coaster of finances, budgeting and planning that comes with being a single income family. If I can give some insight into what made our journey easier, and give someone the courage to dive into a more self-sufficient lifestyle I would call this whole adventure a win.

I want to create a place where I can share my ideas with others and hope that they can make them work. I feel like we are all under this made up pressure to be perfect. Not everything you do has to be picture perfect. Being a mom is a messy job, we all can't be winners all the time. I want to help my readers learn to work with what they have and if it works for them, then go with it!
